їOne of the oldest towns in Jordan. It’s not really known when Al-Salt was exactly inhabited but it’s believed that it was built on a cluster of three hills by the Macedonians during the era of Alexander the Great. It was not until the end of the 19th century though, during the Ottoman rule, that this ancient town enjoyed its most prosperous period.
Located on the old highway leading to Jerusalem, the Ottomans established it as their regional administrative base and encouraged settlement from other parts of the empire. As the status of the town flourished, wealthy merchants arrived into the city and built their houses, which gave Al-Salt the unique charming character it enjoys today.
beautiful sandstone houses
These beautiful sandstone houses with their typical domed roofs, interior courtyards and characteristic tall arched windows are a true resemblance of the fine architecture imported from the city of Nablus in Palestine and is definitely worth a visit.
There is a lot more to see in Al Salt. This ancient town offers an exciting leap into history. Start with a stroll down the vibrant market in Al Hammam street with its small local handicraft shops, perfumeries and bakeries. Continue to Al Ein Plaza, a hub where old men socialize, entertain and pray in the surrounding mosques and churches before continuing with their daily routine. From there head up towards the mosque on the hill overlooking amazing views of the city.
Museums and Churches
You should not miss out on visiting the museums in Al Salt. Both the Historical Old Salt Museum and the Archaeological Museum are worth stopping at. There are also numerous churches dating back to the 16th century. The three main ones you should consider seeing are Al-Khader Orthodox Church, the Dormition of Virgin Mary Orthodox Church and the Latin Church designed by an Italian architect.
the mixture of local lifestyle
In our opinion, there is no better way to know about the city, its history and culture than to go on a walking tour with a local guide. Follow the Harmony trail to know about the lifestyle mixture between the Muslim and the Christian community. Interact with the locals and learn about their daily lives, sample local food or have a traditional meal either with a local family or at one of the numerous traditional restaurants in the city.
